Edward Sawyer, Boy Scout, 1918
UA Archives | Upper Arlington History
Edward Sawyer was a member of Troop 10, Columbus Council of Boy Scouts of America. The troop was first organized in January 1917 and consisted of twenty-eight boys from the TriVillage area. The members of the troop participated in such civic activities as Red Cross and YMCA drives, Santa Claus Club, State Fairs, Dairy Shows, and such patriotic activities as selling war bonds and war savings stamps. Edward Sawyer, pictured here, won a medal from the Treasury Department for selling ten or more bonds in the Second Liberty Loan sale. He did even better in the Third Liberty Loan sale in which he sold 144 applications totaling $26,750. His sales alone accounted for 8.5 percent of all the Boy Scout sales in the greater Columbus area. Edward later co-founded a literary society at the new Upper Arlington School on Waltham Road. His contemporary, Emily Frances, fondly remembers his “gigantic rope-swinging on Roxbury Road” in her reminiscences about life in early Upper Arlington. The Willits H. Sawyer family lived at 1499 Roxbury Road.
